Given the Warner Bros. commitment to the IMAX format is one that the other studios seemingly don't share, it's no surprise that Warner Bros. films keep breaking IMAX records set by other Warner Bros. films. Debuting in 66 IMAX theaters in North America back in mid-November, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire took in $2.93 million in its first weekend, the largest three day opening for an IMAX Hollywood simultaneous release. The film's Friday opening pulled in $1.06 million, a single day record, and the Saturday and Sunday figures were also at record levels. "With Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Warner Bros. Pictures created another fantastic vehicle for us to deliver the IMAX Experience, which brought more people out of their homes and back into theatres," say IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "Despite the industry's overall box office decline, IMAX DMR films saw a steady increase in grosses last year. Given the strength of our film slate for 2006, and the growing IMAX theatre network, we believe this new record may be short-lived." Whoa. Talking about harshing the Warner buzz. Overall, "Goblet of Fire" has taken in more than $275 million domestically. |
